Timeline

Graph above shows amount of lenses released over years. In 2004 – 2005 period are Konica-Minolta premieres. Year 2006 brought first Sony lenses, 18 total, including 15 full frame – the full frame lenses releases are marked with darker gray on the graph. Years with Photokina trade show are marked orange.
We can also see how Sony released lenses in months:

On vertical axis you can see the amount of lenses released, on horizontal you see months. With lighter shade of gray I marked Konica-Minolta releases. June is an exception here due to massive lenses release after Sony’s takeover of the KM. Releases usually take place early and late summer, or near the beginning of the year. Between October and December there are no releases at all.
Sony and the competition
Sony has one of the smaller offers of the lenses (though if you’ll take into account all lenses on the A bayonet situation looks a little bit different), so in theory we should see an effort to match the competition. Reality however is quite… surprising:

Red line shows the amount of lens releases from Canon, while yellow are Nikon announcements. Total amount of releases over periods looks as follows:
| 2004 – 2012 | Sony+KM: 42 Canon: 28 Nikon: 41 |
| 2007 – 2012 | Sony: 18 Canon: 18 Nikon: 32 |
| 2011 – 2012 | Sony: 2 Canon: 4 Nikon: 5 |
After first big entry in 2006 Sony a little bit gave up expansion of the lenses line-up comparing to, for example, Nikon, and instead focused on the cameras – till today Sony is far ahead from the competition, having roughly twice as much bodies released since 2006 as either Canon or Nikon
